This blog is created for ETC-447 to reflect on technology and how to apply it in the future classroom. The content in the following posts is reflection writing pieces to apply the strategies I learn in my future practices. This blog will benefit me as I can reference it when I have my future classroom and adapt strategies for my future teacher website as parents can reference it throughout the semester.
Hi Alana!
ReplyDeleteI love that you included Khan Academy because I think that is such a great resource for all ages. I remember using it for the first time in elementary school and I still use it in to this day. It is one I always recommend to students because of how well the problems are explained. I also included Quizlet in mine because I love all of the other features like matching and spelling. I've never used iReady before but it looks interesting, thanks!
Hi Alana,
ReplyDeleteYou have included a resource that I haven't heard of before, iReady. I love the fact that it tracks student progress and targets individual needs. Although there is a fee, its a pretty small one for a YEAR. I appreciate the cons provided, definitely a new tool to add to my teacher's box. Thank you!
Hi Alana!
ReplyDeleteI have seen all three of these resources used before! I love Quizlet and iReady! I love the Quizlet Live feature, I think it's so cool, and I think Quizlet is great for classes where there's a lot of essential vocabulary to understand because you can assign the students a set of flashcards for each unit and part of the assignment is that they have to complete each mode with that set of flashcards, and if they complete all of the assigned modes, then IDEALLY they should know the terms and corresponding definitions by memory.
I watched the students in my practicum last semester use iReady for their math practice, I found it so incredible how they were practicing their adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and even working with fractions on this resource. The kids loved it. Their requirement was to complete 60 minutes on iReady math every week before Friday because every Friday morning, they had "Fun Friday" which was an art activity. If they didn't have the 60 minutes done, they had to complete the 60 minutes before they could join the Fun Friday activity.
I had the same complaints about Khan Academy, it really only showed the traditional way of working certain math concepts, which is okay for some kids. However, each kid has their own individual learning needs, so the traditional way of solving math problems isn't always the way that kids need to be shown. I have kids who see the traditional adding and subtracting and ask "How come they can't teach us like that?" While others truly benefit from the newer methods of teaching adding and subtracting on number lines or with manipulatives. So I can relate to the weaknesses of Khan Academy. It's great for some, but not great for most. None of these resources will be "Great for all," but we can hope they're "Great for most."
Thanks for a great post!
Alana,
ReplyDeleteiReady is a resource I have seen utilized in three of the five schools I have completed a practicum. It is a resource I struggle to understand how to use; however, the students seem to always manipulate the application easily. As a learner who benefits from the use of notecards, Quizlet has always been a favorite of mine and is an application I plan to share in my class. Thank you for sharing these tools along with one I have not observed in use. Khan Academy will be a resource added to my list!
Hi Alana,
ReplyDeleteKhan Academy is one of the sites I came across when researching but I didn’t get deep into it. From your summary it looks like a good tool except for the part where it only teaches one strategy. Quizlet is one I have used myself and it can make studying fun especially for students. I think another great thing about it is that kids won’t lose their notes. I had not heard of iReady before, but it seems like a great tool for math especially as it lets the teacher know where the students are struggling. Nice presentation!
